The upcoming cabinet elections mark a pivotal moment in shaping the direction of our college community, as we seek individuals who embody integrity, passion, and a commitment to serving their fellow students. Here, you’ll find all the essential information you need to participate in this democratic process, from candidacy requirements and important dates to candidate platforms and voting procedures.

Election Timeline: (The timeline is subject to change, all times are in CST)
Interest form opens: Wednesday, February 21st 
Interest form closes: 5pm, Wednesday, February 28th
Mandatory candidate meeting: 8pm, Wednesday, February 28th
Campaign period opens: Thursday, February 29th
Candidate Forum: 8pm, Wednesday, March 6th
VOTING OPENS!: Monday and Tuesday, March 11TH-12TH
Grievance Period: Wednesday to Friday, March 13th-15th

Filing Candidacy

The following positions are up for election for the 2024-25 academic year. You may only run for one position. 

PRESIDENT
The President shall serve as the chief liaison between SGA and the student body. The President shall also serve as the chief representative of SGA to the administration, faculty, student body, Board of Trustees, other colleges, and community organizations. The President shall establish a semester SGA agenda at the beginning of each semester, providing updates no less than once per semester in the form of a “State of the College” address. The President shall organize a training session for Cabinet Officers prior to the start of the fall semester. The President shall meet regularly with the College President and the College Vice-President for Student Affairs, or their designees. The President shall convene and preside over the Cabinet, and consult with the SGA supervisor regarding performance issues within the cabinet. The President shall oversee execution of all directives from the Student Senate and will report back to the body. The President shall have oversight jurisdiction over all substantive aspects of the student initiative system and shall review all proposals seeking passage, offering recommendations for improvement after review. The President shall be a non-voting member of the College Alumni Council, College Committee on Student Life (CSL), SGA Budget Steering Committee, SGA Financial Board, and may sit as a non-voting member on any other SGA standing or ad-hoc committee, with the exception of the Oversight, Ethics, & Elections Committee. The Vice President of Student Affairs, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the President shall appoint the student members of all college committees upon request following an equitable application process that is open to all students, in consultation with OEEC. 

VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS (VPAA)
The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall serve as the chief SGA advocate to the administration, faculty, student body, the Board of Trustees, other colleges, and community organizations in all academic matters. The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall work with faculty to oversee all organizational aspects of the Student Educational Policy Committees (SEPCs). The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall meet regularly with the SGA Faculty Advisor, the faculty, the Associate Deans, and the Dean of the College. The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall be a member of the College Curriculum Committee (CCC) and Committee on Academic Standing. The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall chair the Student Council on Curriculum (SCC). The Vice President of Student Affairs, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the President shall appoint the student members of all college committees upon request following an equitable application process that is open to all students, in consultation with OEEC. The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall communicate consistently with the SGA President. The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall support the President in the creation of semester agendas and execution of all Senate directives regarding academic affairs. The VPAA will fulfill the President’s duties if both the President is no longer capable of fulfilling their duties, and the VPSA is no longer capable of fulfilling the President’s duties.

VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT AFFAIRS (VPSA)
The Vice President of Student Affairs shall serve as the chief SGA advocate to the administration, faculty, student body, the Board of Trustees, other colleges, and community organizations in all matters of student life, student affairs, and college services. The Vice President of Student Affairs shall meet regularly with the Grinnell College Vice President for Student Affairs. The SGA Vice President of Student Affairs shall be a member of the Dining Services and ResLife Committees. The SGA Vice President of Student Affairs shall co-chair the Committee for Student Life (CSL) with the Dean of Students. The SGA Vice President of Student Affairs shall co-chair the Safety and Security Advisory Committee. The Vice President of Student Affairs, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the President shall appoint the student members of all college committees upon request following an equitable application process that is open to all students, in consultation with OEEC. The Vice President of Student Affairs shall communicate consistently with the President of SGA. The SGA Vice President of Student Affairs shall support the President in creation of semester agendas and execution of all Senate directives regarding student life. In the event that the President is no longer capable of fulfilling the duties of the President, the VPSA will fulfill the President’s duties.
